Belfast authorities keep investigating E coli breakout

October 17, 2012

E coli outbreak investigations continuing

Public health officials are continuing to investigate an outbreak of E coli O157 connected to Flicks restaurant in Belfast.

As of 15:00 BST yesterday (October 16th), there were 20 confirmed cases and 150 probable cases.

Six people were hospitalised since the beginning of the outbreak on September 24th, however the majority have now gone home.

Dr Michael Devine, a consultant in Health Protection at the Public Health Authority stated that they expect the number of victims to rise, as the incubation period for E coli can take up to seven days.

The health expert urged people to wash their hands regularly after using the bathroom and before they prepare and eat food.

Raw and cooked food should be stored separately and everything washed thoroughly before eating in order to help prevent it from spreading.

"Symptoms caused by E coli O157 can include diarrhoea, which can range from mild to profuse watery or bloody diarrhoea, tummy cramps, nausea or vomiting," said the doctor.

Investigations are continuing.
