Daily multivitamin may reduce risk of cancer in men

October 18, 2012

A study explored the effects of a daily multivitamin in men over a decade and found that there is a reduction in the risk of cancer.

The risk of cancer may be reduced in men if they take a daily multivitamin.

Lead author Dr Michael Gaziano, who is also the chief of the division of aging at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, explained that the study involved almost 15,000 men over 50 years of age.

The participants took either a placebo or a multivitamin every day for more than a decade.

An eight percent reduction in total cancer was found in the group taking the multivitamin, when compared to the placebo group.

Researchers also found that multivitamins were linked with an obvious decrease in cancer deaths.

They cannot determine as yet, which particular vitamins or minerals in the pill might be responsible for the reduction in cancer risk.

"Now we know that taking a daily multivitamin may also be considered in the prevention of cancer in middle-aged and older men," said study co-author, Howard D Sesso.

Along with purchasing health insurance, men taking multivitamins may be improving their long-term health.
