Drivers reminded to wear glasses if needed

February 02, 2012

A poll by vision specialist Ultralase suggests that many people do not wear their glasses or contact lenses when driving.

Private medical insurance customers who are visually impaired should remember to wear their glasses or lenses when getting behind the wheel of their car, experts have said.

A poll by vision specialist Ultralase, supported by road safety charity Brake, suggests that one-third of visually impaired motorists drive without their glasses or contact lenses on at least two occasions each week.

Reasons included forgetting to put their glasses on, only planning to drive a short distance, and needing to wear sunglasses instead.

The survey, which was conducted by research firm Opinium, also revealed that nine out of ten Britons support calls for eye tests to be made compulsory for drivers.

Tony Veverka, Ultralase's chief executive, described the risks taken by many motorists as "disturbing".

He remarked: "This relaxed attitude shows not only in the risks that motorists are taking but through the lack of standard testing for licence holders too.

"By campaigning together, and calling for more thorough driver eye tests, we hope to avoid such incidents going forward and get Britain to take sight more seriously, especially where a vehicle is involved."
