Effective communication 'promotes better treatment adherence'

January 03, 2013

A study has demonstrated the importance of a trusting relationship between doctors and patients

Effective communication between a doctor and a patient results in higher rates of accurate treatment adherence.

That is according to a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, which revealed that better relationships between physicians and their patients leads to improved medication adherence.

Those in need of medical assistance can compare health insurance prices to ensure they find an affordable policy that will help them manage the cost of care.

As the research from the University of California revealed, 30 percent of study participants were not necessarily taking their medication the way their doctor thought they were.

However, rates for non-adherence stood a just four to six percent in those who felt their doctors had listened to them, involved them in their decision and gained their trust.

Lead author of the study Neda Ratanawongsa said: "What is unique about our study is that we found medication adherence is better if the physician has established a trusting relationship with the patient."
