Improvements to cancer cover 'should boost consumer confidence'

April 12, 2012

An expert has claimed that recent improvements to cancer cover should improve the public's confidence in private medical insurance.

A number of private medical insurance providers have recently made improvements to their cancer cover which should help to improve consumers' confidence in these products, it has been claimed.

Brian Walters, a private medical insurance adviser at Regency Health in Northamptonshire, told FT Adviser that limitations to the cover provided for cancer patients have been undermining clients' confidence.

For instance, some patients have experienced time limits on payouts or a lack of cover for certain anti-cancer therapies.

However, Mr Walters noted that insurers have "significantly improved" their cancer cover in recent months.

"These improvements should help to promote consumer confidence in private medical insurance and present a challenge to the remaining insurers that continue to specify limits on cancer treatment," he told the news provider.

Mr Walters also observed that no time limits on advanced cancer drugs and cover for palliative care used to be the exception to the rule, but are "fast becoming the norm".

One insurer that recently enhanced its cancer cover is AXA PPP, which has also extended the booking service provided to policyholders.
