Men fail to confront prostate cancer concerns

March 02, 2012

A survey has found that many men fail to visit their GP when they experience possible symptoms of prostate cancer.

Many men delay visiting their GP with concerns about their prostate health, a survey has found.

Researchers at Dr Foster Intelligence polled 3,671 men and women on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Charity.

They found that many men do not seek medical attention because they lack knowledge of the disease and its symptoms.

Just one in three male respondents over the age of 45 knew any of the risk factors for prostate cancer and less than half (48 per cent) of those with concerns had visited their GP.

Owen Sharp, chief Executive of the Prostate Cancer Charity, warned that men are risking their health by failing to confront their concerns.

"Not all men who are worried about prostate cancer will have the disease. Yet for those for whom this disease will become a reality, a timely chat with their GP may make all the difference," he pointed out.

"We certainly don't want men to panic about getting prostate cancer as they get older, but equally with the government refusing to make awareness of prostate cancer a priority, it is important that men do take action on the disease."

Symptoms of prostate cancer include frequency and difficulty in urinating, and sometimes blood in the urine - although men often assume these are merely symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
