New Hep C screening a 'game-changer', says study
October 17, 2012
Hepatitis C can be tested and screened accurately and quickly using new methods
A new hepatitis C test could change the way medical insurance customers and the rest of the world is screened for the illness.
Research has found that rapid tests and point-of-care for hepatitis C are just as reliable as tests in the laboratory.
Led by the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, the results show that these new tests are highly accurate and have a rapid turn-around time
This discovery will change screening techniques and eventually help to manage the hepatitis C infection globally.
The research is published in the current issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Dr Nitika Pant Pai, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University explained that the new techniques resulted in 97 to 99 percent accuracy.
Providing results within 30 minutes, these tests usually don’t need specialized equipment and many do not even need electricity.
"It is now time to optimise their potential by integrating them in routine practice settings," said the expert.
