Ovarian cancer survival lower in UK, says study

Women are less likely to survive ovarian cancer in the UK compared to other similar countries, according to a new study.

This is because there is a very low survival rate in patients with more advanced stages of the disease.

The research was conducted by Cancer Research UK's Cancer Survival Group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and was published in the journal Gynecologic Oncology, released today (October 3rd).

Generally the study found that the same amounts of UK women were diagnosed at each stage of the disease as in other countries, such as Australia, Canada and Denmark.

This indicates a possible issue with access to treatment or the quality of care in the UK. Other factors preventing women from completing or receiving treatment could be having another illness or being overweight.

The UK was also found to be lacking when it came to at actually recording the stage at diagnosis, compared to the other countries. This needs to change as soon as possible to give every patient a good fighting chance at survival, explained Dr John Butler, study author and Cancer Research UK clinical advisor for the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnershipproject from the Royal Marsden Hospital.
