Health insurance customers 'should watch alcohol intake'
November 26, 2010
Excessive drinking may cause problems in later life for health insurance customers.
Health insurance customers wanting to maintain their wellbeing should make sure they are not drinking too much alcohol.
According to Dr Evelyn Gillan, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, people who binge drink are leaving themselves at risk of future health problems.
She added consumers should not be attracted to cut-price alcohol in supermarkets, as overindulging could lead to "paying a bigger price later in life".
Her comments follow the publication of research in the British Medical Journal which revealed a link between binge drinking and heart disease.
"Alcohol has been linked to 60 diseases and this is yet more evidence which should act as a wake-up call," Dr Gillan told health insurance customers.
The College of Emergency Medicine has recently called for the government to introduce tougher regulation on the marketing of alcohol.
It said this could help to reduce alcohol-related harm and the problems it causes for emergency departments across the UK.
