Health insurance customers with flu 'should stay in bed'

December 31, 2010

There are a number of different courses of action health insurance policyholders who catch flu can take.

Health insurance customers and others who catch flu should avoid going out and spend plenty of time in bed.

This is the advice of Dr Catherine Hood, scientific advisor to Mentholatum responsebeta anti-viral hand sanitizer, who said it is important for such people to get plenty of rest and stay warm.

"Take regular paracetamol or ibuprofen to keep your temperature under control, [while] other over-the-counter treatments can help symptoms too," she advised health insurance customers and others affected with the condition.

Dr Hood added that drinking plenty of fluids during the period of illness will help to avoid dehydration, while a doctor should be called if symptoms are not improving after 48 hours.

Her comments follow the Health Protection Agency calling on people in at-risk groups to get a vaccination against flu.

The organisation said the elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions such as heart problems should be looking to get immunised.
