Homeowners given tips on energy-saving solutions

September 26, 2011

The NAEA has listed a number of ways that people can improve their homes to make them more energy-efficient.

Consumers are facing rising utility bills this winter and many will be considering all possible ways to save money.

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has issued some timely guidance for those concerned about how they will be able to afford to heat their homes.

According to the association, the benefits of installing cavity wall insulation can be felt "instantly" and consumers will enjoy substantial savings.

Loft insulation should also be considered, while strips of foam can be fitted around windows and doors to reduce draughts and help retain heat.

External pipes should be well insulated to minimise heat loss and reduce the risk of freezing during cold spells.

Householders may also be able to trade in their old boiler and save money on a new and more efficient one, which would help to reduce their bills.

NAEA chief executive Peter Bolton King said: "It is important that homeowners are aware of the options available to them when looking to make their homes warmer this winter.

"With bills on the rise, these measures can make a real difference, as well as having the welcome side-effect of increasing the carbon efficiency of their property."

Homeowners should also remember to compare gas and electricity suppliers, as they may be able to switch to a cheaper tariff.
