Medical insurance 'helps to save mother's life'
December 29, 2010
A Leicestershire mother has spoken about how private healthcare helped her to survive cancer.
A woman was able to take advantage of private healthcare after contracting pancreatic cancer thanks to her husband's medical insurance.
Leicestershire-based Amanda Davis-Baird, who has two young children, told the Daily Mail that after showing potential signs of the disease, she was given a six-week wait for a gastroscopy on the NHS.
This led to a decision to go private, which resulted in the condition being diagnosed and surgery taking place successfully.
Mrs Davis-Baird said she was extremely grateful to the medical insurance held by her husband.
"By the time of my first NHS test, I'd already undergone surgery. The NHS is brilliant - but if I'd been relying on it I wouldn't be here now," she explained.
A recent study published in the Lancet journal revealed the UK is lagging behind other developed nations on cancer survival rates, with late diagnoses cited as a common cause of fatalities, reported BBC News last week.
