Older health insurance customers 'should have high room temperatures'
November 29, 2010
Keeping a property warm is an important step for older health insurance customers who want to stay well this winter.
Health insurance customers who are in their autumn years need to make sure they keep their houses warm this winter.
This is the advice of Simon Bottery, director of policy at Independent Age, who explained older people are more vulnerable to the cold temperatures of winter than their counterparts in younger generations.
"They must keep their room temperatures higher than younger people to stay healthy and are likely to spend a lot more time indoors," he suggested to heath insurance policyholders.
Mr Bottery said this can be a challenge for many people who have passed retirement age due to the expensive nature of fuel costs.
According to research published by the Office for National Statistics earlier this month, there were around 25,000 winter deaths in England and Wales during 2009/10.
Despite last year bringing the coldest winter in 14 years, this figure was 30 per cent lower than the amount of fatalities recorded in 2008/09.
