Prescriptions withdrawn from patients in NHS cutbacks

December 31, 2010

An NHS trust has decided to remove some healthcare prescriptions in an effort to save money.

The healthcare treatments of some patients in the north-west of England are to be affected by a decision to withdraw dozens of drugs from an NHS prescription list.

NHS Stockport has stopped doctors from proscribing 60 medicines in an effort to save £750,000, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The body is attempting to make more than £21 million of savings, but the course of action has led to concern among patients.

Peter Weatherston, 76, said he is disgusted a drug he has been taking to reduce cramp and boost circulation for the past decade is being withdrawn.

"It has definitely worked for me. I'm frightened to death what will happen when I run out," he stated.

Earlier this month, Simplyhealth's sales and marketing director Jamie Wilson said NHS healthcare services are likely to come under "extreme pressure" during 2011 as they seek to make efficiency savings while also dealing with rising costs.
