A healthy diet may reduce risk of pancreatic cancer

August 16, 2013

A healthy diet may help to reduce people's risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

People may be able to reduce their risk of pancreatic cancer by adhering to expert recommendations on diet, a study suggests.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, US, looked at data on 537,218 people, aged 50 to 71 years, who had participated in a diet and health study in the US.

Individuals were given a diet 'score' based on how closely they adhered to official American dietary guidance published in 2005.

Analysis revealed that those who followed the guidelines closely were 15 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those with the lowest levels of adherence.

Publishing their findings in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the researchers observed that the American dietary guidelines aim to improve overall health, including maintaining a healthy weight and preventing disease.

"Our findings support the hypothesis that a high-quality diet may also play a role in reducing pancreatic cancer risk," they added.

The findings could have important implications, as pancreatic cancer is currently the tenth most common form of cancer in the UK.
