More people take gadgets on holiday

February 06, 2012

A survey has found that the majority of over-50s take devices such as smartphones or tablet computers with them on holiday.

Britons are increasingly taking gadgets such as MP3 players and smartphones on overseas trips, a new survey has found.

Research conducted on behalf of Saga Travel Insurance revealed that 70 per cent of over-50s take at least one gadget when they go on holiday.

Almost a third of people pack their satnav; 26 per cent take an MP3 player; and one in five refuse to go away without a tablet device such as an iPad or Kindle.

The trend means that many over-50s are able to communicate far more effectively from overseas, with the majority staying in touch with family members via email and 15 per cent listening to internet radio.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Insurance, warned that people could become a target for thieves if they carry expensive gadgets on holiday.

"We would advise them to make sure they have adequate cover for their belongings before they travel and to make sure they register the loss of any of their belongings with the local police straightaway, as not doing so could lead to problems when they try to make a claim," he said.

A recent study by Halifax found that almost half of over-55s manage their savings online, while just 40 per cent prefer to use a bank branch.
