Almost one in three women have never undergone health screening
January 26, 2012
A survey by private medical insurance firm Bupa suggests that many women have never attended screening.
Almost a third of women in the UK have never undergone any type of health screening, new research suggests.
Private medical insurance firm Bupa commissioned a survey of 1,021 women which found that 29 per cent had never been screened for diseases such as cervical cancer - which affects around 2,900 women each year.
Dr Katrina Herren, medical director of Bupa Health and Wellbeing, emphasised the importance of going for regular cervical screening tests.
She explained: "Cervical screening detects pre-cancerous cells which can develop into cervical cancer.
"Early detection of pre-cancerous cells is vitally important in preventing cervical cancer."
Dr Herren added that women who receive an abnormal test result are monitored closely or treated to prevent their pre-cancerous cells from developing into cancer.
Women who opt for a Bupa female health assessment also receive tests for other diseases, such as breast cancer and diabetes.
The assessment takes around 60 minutes and women spend up to 30 minutes with a Bupa doctor or nurse who can answer their questions and concerns.
