Brain health app 'may fight dementia'

December 06, 2011

Bupa has launched a new digital tool that could help people to stave off dementia.

A new iPhone app launched by private medical insurance firm Bupa could help in the fight against dementia.

BrainyApp is a digital tool that is designed to help people monitor and improve their brain and heart health.

According to Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, many people do not realise that healthy lifestyle choices can help both their heart and their brain.

The app, which was designed by Alzheimer's Australia and Bupa Health Foundation, was first launched in Australia and is now available in the UK for the first time.

Users answer questions on their diet, exercise levels and lifestyle and are given suggestions about how to improve them.

It also includes games that are designed to keep people mentally active.

Dr Graham Stokes, director of dementia care for Bupa Care Services, said: "There is evidence to show that keeping the mind exercised can stave off the onset of dementia

"BrainyApp highlights that good physical health also has a part to play. Best of all it's good fun."

There are currently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK, according to the Alzheimer's Society, and this is expected to exceed one million by 2021.
