Health kick 'can reverse ageing'

September 18, 2013

Healthy lifestyles can actually reverse a key factor in the ageing process, a new study has suggested.

Going on a health kick can help reverse the ageing process, a new study has claimed.

Researchers at the University of California said telomeres - which keep chromosomes stable and prevent problems occurring when cells spilt - shorten over time, causing splitting cells to make chromosomes unstable, a central aspect of the ageing process.

It found good diet and lifestyle can help lengthen telomeres, with practices like yoga and vegetarianism enabling a sample group of prostate cancer sufferers to reverse the shortening process.

Biochemist Dr Lynne Cox from Oxford University issued a note of caution, however, by noting it is premature to say such changes to lifestyle could increase life expectancy.

Private healthcare checks may help patients monitor how a healthier lifestyle could help them.

New data published by the Office for National Statistics has indicated the south of England currently has the longest healthy life expectancy, with Richmond upon Thames topping the list at 70.3 years.
