Private medical insurance firms 'to be applauded for Avastin funding'
September 01, 2010
The work of private medical insurance companies has been commended.
Private medical insurance companies have been praised for their continued commitment to providing expensive treatments such as cancer drug Avastin.
Daily Mail columnist James Coney said it is laudable that the firms are funding the life-prolonging treatment as part of their cover, especially as the NHS does not provide it on cost grounds.
He said that it is not the fault of the private medical insurance companies that the public sector has decided against providing Avastin to patients.
"As long as health insurers keep paying for the drug for those sufferers who would benefit, it's hard to find fault with this," added Mr Coney.
He said the treatment has helped to provide private medical insurance customers have "extra weeks, months or even years with their families".
Last month, cancer patient Jill DeCruz told the paper that she believes Avastin has kept her alive as she was only given weeks to live when she began the treatment and was even admitted to a hospice 18 months ago.
Since then, her cancer has gone into partial remission.
