Internet 'helping more people learn about healthcare'

September 06, 2010

Healthcare advice and information is being sought by large numbers of people via the internet, it has been discovered.

The internet is playing a part in more people taking a greater interest in their own healthcare.

According to new figures from Simplyhealth, 29 per cent of 16 to 29-years-olds have gone online to look for a potential diagnosis for a health condition they are suffering from.

Roy Lilley, an independent health policy analyst and social commentator in the field of healthcare, stated that the internet is a "huge" place for people to get advice.

He stated that while this could occasionally be dangerous because of suspect advice, it is generally positive to see people going online to access information.

"The internet is helping us to know more and that is never a bad thing and it's a start," Mr Lilley said.

He added that has been a general change to the nation's overall perception taking individual responsibility for healthcare, thanks to campaigns such as 'five a day' message for fruit and vegetables.
